An engagement set in Key West, Florida on Labor Day 2011.
Jasmine Azalea Ferrette is a 31-year-old meteorologist. Born in St. Croix, she ended up in Key West after finishing her education at Florida State University. The first friend she made after settling in introduced her to her brother. After dating for five years, they moved in together and adopted a Labrador Retriever mix named Tiana.
Johann Paul Oliver Prince (J.P.) is a 33-year-old divemaster and underwater photographer. He gets paid to do what he loves most in life - photography and scuba diving. And he lives with the only woman he ever loved more than his job. For him, life is pretty perfect.
Music helps set the mood while I write. That is why the inspiration playlists play such a vital role in my writing process. These are the songs that inspired the Labor Day short story Key Lime Pie:
Key Lime Pie - by Kenny Chesney
The story is set in Key West and I decided to call it Key Lime Pie. As I started building the playlist, I thought I remembered having a song with the same name. And it became the first song on the playlist.
Brown Eyed Girl - by Jimmy Buffett
This is Jasmine’s theme song.
Spread the Love - by Kenny Chesney Feat. The Wailers & Elan
This is J.P.’s theme song.
Señorita - by Camila Cabello & Shawn Mendes
This is a fun and sexy song. It felt like a perfect song for this playlist and the couple in this story.
Guitars And Tiki Bars - by Kenny Chesney
For a story set in a location where vacation season is year-round, I wanted a few songs that felt like vacations songs. This is one of them.
When The Sun Goes Down - by Kenny Chesney w/ Uncle Kracker
Can I just say ditto? I’ve used this song on a lot of my vacation playlists. This is the first time I put it on an inspiration playlist.
Goldmine - by Colbie Caillat
If there’s a female artist whose songs seem to have a vacation vibe, I’d have to say it’s Colbie Caillat. This song fit perfectly with the Kenny Chesney and Jimmy Buffett songs that I’d already picked.
Never Be the Same - by Camila Cabello
I really like this song. I could probably use it on every playlist for every romance I write. It easily represents that moment in a relationship when you realize you’ll never be the same.
Somewhere In The Sun - by Kenny Chesney
This is another song with a vacation vibe. Every winter when the weather gets cold here, I long to be somewhere in the sun.
Trying to Reason With Hurricane Season - by Kenny Chesney w/ Jimmy Buffett
Back home in St. Croix and in her new home in Key West, Jasmine has a lot of friends and family who rely on tourism for income. Hurricane season can really affect how well they do in a year. I try to keep that mind and buy local when I visit places that are so reliant on tourism.
I Do - by Colbie Caillat
I love this song. And this is the perfect inspiration playlist for me to use it.
Pre-You - by Jimmy Buffett
When building this playlist, I challenged myself to find a Jimmy Buffett song that I didn’t have memorized.
Somewhere With You - by Kenny Chesney
I picked this Kenny Chesney song because of the title.
Soulfully - by Jimmy Buffett
When I think of Jimmy Buffett, I generally think of party or vacation songs. So I was surprised to find this ballad. This is the song Jasmine and J.P. dance to at their wedding.
