What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?
October 4, 2024
Welcome to Day 3 of promoting my next release - Time for Love. I’ve been working on this collection for about four years. The romantic collection has twenty short stories - ten about how a couple got engaged and ten about how a couple met. The story I’m going to talk about today is What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?, a short story taking place on New Year’s Eve 2009.
Lani is coerced into hosting New Year’s Eve despite her boyfriend Asher’s absence. She was planning for a quiet night alone. But Asher has a special surprise for her. What kind of surprise? You’ll have to read the 9th story in the collection to find out.
How does this story relate to other stories in the gagengirl universe?
This is the only story in the collection with no ties to another story I’ve written. I decided that I wanted my New Year’s Eve story to be set in Hawai’i because it is the last state to finally start the new year. I have characters in other Hawaiian cities, but I decided to pick a small town where I didn’t have any characters.
What can you share about Lani?
Lani is a Native Hawaiian and comes from a long line of Native Hawaiians. She left Hawaii to study to become a veterinarian, always intending to move back when she finished school. Her best friend is her younger sister Malia.
And what can you share about Asher?
Asher is from Cheyenne, Wyoming. My first character from the state. It’s hard to say too much about him without giving away the entire story. But I can share this fun fact - I was naming him while watching television and SNL came on. I was trying to decide on his last name when I heard Chloe Fineman’s name. And he became Asher Fineman, which gave me a little play on words - Fine man.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about this story?
It’s a romance, the story of how Lani and Asher got engaged. It is one of my favorites because it is just a simple, sweet love story.
Do you know which story you’ll tell us about tomorrow?
Yes. Tomorrow’s story is An Easter Story. I can’t wait to tell you about how one of those characters got his name.
